How much drip tape do you need: calculations and ready-made figures

Formula, ready-made calculations for standard plot sizes (100–10,000 m², 1–10 ha), examples by crop. No mistakes, no overspending.

Basic formula

L = (W / w) × D × k

  • L — total tape length in meters
  • W — plot width (m)
  • w — width of one bed including row spacing (m)
  • D — plot length (m)
  • k — buffer factor: 1.10–1.15

Example: Plot 10×20 m, beds 90 cm wide with 30 cm row spacing (w = 1.2 m), 12% buffer. L = (10 / 1.2) × 20 × 1.12 = 186 m → round up to a 200 m roll.

Ready-made calculations: home garden

Calculated for 90 cm beds with 30 cm row spacing (standard vegetable layout), 12% buffer.

Area Dimensions Number of beds Tape needed Recommended roll
1 сотка 10 × 10 м 8 шт ~90 м 200 м
2 сотки 10 × 20 м 8 шт ~180 м 200 м
5 соток 20 × 25 м 16 шт ~450 м 500 м
10 соток 25 × 40 м 20 шт ~900 м 1000 м
20 соток 40 × 50 м 33 шт ~1850 м 2 × 1000 м
50 соток 50 × 100 м 41 шт ~4600 м 2 × 3000 м

Important: If rows are longer than 50 m, standard non-PC tape will deliver uneven irrigation. For rows 50–100 m, use pressure-compensating tape or split into zones.

Calculations by crop

Different crops have different bed widths. Here are ready-made coefficients for major crops:

Crop Bed width + row spacing Emitter spacing Tape per 100 m² Tape per 1 ha
Tomatoes 120–150 см 20–30 см ~70 м ~7 000 м
Cucumbers 100–140 см 20 см ~80 м ~8 000 м
Peppers, eggplant 100–120 см 20 см ~90 м ~9 000 м
Strawberries 80–100 см 15 см ~110 м ~11 000 м
Potatoes 70–80 см 30–40 см ~130 м ~13 000 м
Carrots, onions 60–70 см 10–15 см ~150 м ~15 000 м
Watermelons, melons 200–250 см 40–50 см ~45 м ~4 500 м
Grapes 250–300 см 40 см PC ~35 м ~3 500 м

Step-by-step calculation

1

Measure the plot

Use a tape measure or pacing (1 step ≈ 0.7 m) to determine the width and length of the plot. Record both figures in meters. If the shape is irregular, divide it into rectangles and calculate each separately.

2

Determine bed width + row spacing

Standard for vegetables — 90 cm bed + 30 cm row spacing = 1.2 m. For strawberries — 70 + 30 = 1.0 m. For potatoes — 50 + 20 = 0.7 m. Use the value from the crop table.

3

Calculate the number of beds

Plot width ÷ (bed width + row spacing) = number of beds. For example: 20 m / 1.2 m = 16 beds. Round DOWN — otherwise they won't fit.

4

Multiply by the length + buffer

Number of beds × plot length × 1.12 (12% buffer) = total tape length. Example: 16 × 30 × 1.12 = 538 m → round up to a 1,000 m roll.

Tip: Buy one size up — unused tape stores well until the next season, and buying an extra 50–100 m later costs more.

5

Add accessory materials

In addition to tape, you will need:

  • Mainline hose: 1 × plot length (perpendicular to the beds)
  • Start connectors with valves: 1 per bed (16 beds = 16 pcs)
  • End caps: 1 per bed (+ 2–3 spare)
  • Repair couplings: 5–10% of the connector count
  • 120 mesh filter: 1 per system

For farm projects starting at 1 ha

When calculating commercial systems, add the following to the basic formula:

  • Zoning: divide the system into 2–8 zones for sequential irrigation (one zone = one valve). Calculate tape per ZONE, not for the entire area
  • For crops with long rows (field 100+ m) — always use PC (pressure-compensating) tape or split into zones with dual connections
  • Wholesale savings: a 3,000 m roll is 20% cheaper than 3 × 1,000 m. An additional discount applies for farm orders starting at 5,000 m
  • Tape thickness: 6 mil — annuals (tomatoes, cucumbers), 8 mil — 3–4 seasons (universal), 10–15 mil — perennials (strawberries, berry crops, grapes)
  • Emitter flow rate: 1.0 L/h for clay, 1.6–2.0 L/h — universal, 2.7 L/h — sandy soils. Affects irrigation duration

For projects starting at 1 ha, our engineer will perform a precise calculation with hydraulic analysis, factoring in slope, water source, and crop type.
