Detailed breakdown by type

1

3–5 layer PVC (most popular)

Multi-layer with textile cord or spiral reinforcement. The best price-to-quality ratio for daily home garden use.

Pros:

  • Flexible, does not kink even in winter
  • UV-stabilized (outer layer is black or grey)
  • Handles pump pressure up to 10 bar
  • Easily connects with quick-release fittings

Cons:

  • Heavier than expandable (2–3 kg per 25 m)
  • Leaches plastic if in contact with food (PVC is not for drinking water)
2

Rubber (EPDM or NBR)

Professional hose for heavy-duty use. EPDM — for hot water (+100°C), NBR — for oil and fuel.

Pros:

  • Most durable: 10+ seasons
  • High pressure up to 15 bar
  • Hot water up to +100°C (EPDM)
  • Minimal UV aging

Cons:

  • Heavy (5 kg per 25 m) — difficult to carry
  • Expensive
  • Stiff in cold weather (< 0°C)
3

Expandable (magic hose)

Fabric over a latex inner tube. Expands to 3 times its length when water is applied.

Pros:

  • Compact — 25 m expandable takes up the same space as 7.5 m of standard hose
  • Lightweight (0.8 kg per 25 m)
  • Does not twist
  • Convenient for mobile watering

Cons:

  • Short-lived: 1–2 seasons (latex ages)
  • Vulnerable to mechanical damage and sharp objects
  • Low pressure < 6 bar
  • Low-quality models crack within 2–3 months
4

LayFlat (flat)

A flat fire-type hose that straightens under pressure. Primary use — drip irrigation mainline. See the separate LayFlat guide.

Pros:

  • Compact roll storage
  • Easy to carry
  • Affordable
  • Ideal as a drip irrigation mainline

Cons:

  • Does not work as a portable hose — collapses
  • Pressure up to 4–6 bar
  • Sensitive to mechanical damage (punctures easily)

Quick selection matrix

  • Daily watering on a 600 m² property: 3-layer PVC 1/2" 25 m — UAH 500
  • High-powered watering with a pump: 5-layer PVC 3/4" + 1" for the mainline
  • Mobile watering, frequent carrying: expandable from quality brands (Gardena, Kärcher)
  • Drip irrigation mainline: LayFlat 16–20 mm
  • Hot water / industrial: EPDM rubber
  • Permanent underground mainline: HDPE pipe (PE100 SDR17)

For professional users

  • For fire use — only certified hoses marked EN 14540 or DSTU EN 14540
  • Industrial LayFlat with polyester PVC coating handles up to 14 bar (Heavy Duty series)
  • Professional brands: Gardena Premium SuperFLEX, Kärcher PrimoFlex, Hozelock Ultra Flex, Rehau
  • For systems with a pump exceeding 5 bar — armored reinforced hose is mandatory
