What is LayFlat

LayFlat (lay-flat, flat hose) is a fire-type hose made of polyethylene or PVC with textile reinforcement. Without pressure, it lies flat and coils into a compact roll. Under pressure, it straightens into a round tube.

The most common application is as a mainline hose for drip irrigation in home gardens and small farms.

LayFlat advantages over rigid HDPE pipe

  • Compact storage: 100 m of hose in a roll takes up 3–5× less space than 100 m of HDPE pipe
  • Quick installation: unrolls by hand; no welding like PPR or special fittings like HDPE
  • Lightweight: 100 m of 20 mm LayFlat = ~6 kg; 100 m of 25 mm HDPE = ~15 kg. One person easily carries a roll
  • Affordable: 1.5–2× cheaper per meter than HDPE
  • Seasonal use: easy to remove for winter and store indoors
  • Simple repairs: if damaged, cut out the defective section and join with a coupling in 5 min

LayFlat limitations

  • Operating pressure: 4–6 bar maximum for standard models. Heavy duty — up to 10 bar, but more expensive
  • Not for underground installation: thin walls are vulnerable to roots, rocks, and rodents. HDPE/PPR is better for burying
  • Puncture-sensitive: sharp objects, machinery, and rodents can cause damage
  • UV degradation: without stabilizers — 1–2 seasons in the sun. Look for UV-stabilized models
  • Water hammer risk: suddenly closing a valve at high flow = burst. Use slow-closing valves
  • Cannot be used as a portable hose: stationary mainline only. For hand watering, use PVC or rubber

LayFlat sizes and pressure

Діаметр Max. flow Operating pressure Application
16 мм (1/2") 0.5-1 м³/год 6 бар Home garden up to 300 m², 5–10 beds
20 мм (3/4") 1-2 м³/год 6 бар Home garden 300–600 m², 10–20 beds
25 мм (1") 2-4 м³/год 5 бар Property 600–1,500 m²
32 мм (1 1/4") 4-6 м³/год 4 бар Small farms up to 0.5 ha
50 мм Heavy Duty 8-15 м³/год 8 бар Commercial systems, fire use

When to choose LayFlat vs. HDPE/PVC

LayFlat — best choice for:

  • Seasonal garden irrigation
  • Surface drip irrigation mainline
  • Temporary water supply
  • Small farms up to 0.5 ha with low pressure
  • Locations requiring frequent disassembly

HDPE/PPR/PVC — better for:

  • Underground installation
  • Permanent stationary mainline
  • Pressure > 6 bar
  • Farms > 1 ha
  • Residential water supply
  • High-temperature systems

Usage tips

  • On first unrolling, let water flow slowly — sudden pressure can deform the seam
  • After the season, drain water, dry in shade (2–3 hours), coil into a roll 30–50 cm in diameter
  • For connections — use dedicated LayFlat clamp fittings or fittings with rubber gaskets
  • Repair punctures with a coupling or dedicated LayFlat tape (Tiger Tape)
  • Store in a dry, warm space during winter, NOT in an unheated shed
